Ragin' Cajuns accept R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl invite for third year in a row

The Ragin’ Cajuns will represent the Sun Belt Conference for the Third Year in a Row

NEW ORLEANS (November 30, 2013) – R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl Officials tonight invited Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns to represent the Sun Belt Conference at the 13th annual game on Dec. 21st at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

After being crowned champions of last year’s bowl, defeating East Carolina 43-34, the Ragin’ Cajuns have officially accepted the invitation to represent the Sun Belt Conference in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl for the third year in a row.  The Ragin’ Cajuns have brought record-setting crowds to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for the past two years: 42,481 in 2011 and 48,828 in 2012.

The invitation, officially made by Bowl Officials following Saturday’s match up over University of Louisiana Monroe, was accepted by Head Coach Mark Hudspeth and Director of Athletics Scott Farmer with great enthusiasm.

“We are thrilled that the Ragin’ Cajuns will be representing the Sun Belt Conference in the New Orleans Bowl for the third straight year,” said Bowl Executive Director Billy Ferrante. “Now in its 13th year, the New Orleans Bowl has become a wonderful tradition for the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana and having a local team continue to participate generates even more excitement among locals and visitors alike.”

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns are currently 8-3. Hudspeth, in his third season at Louisiana, realizes the importance of keeping his team focused in the coming weeks, but also took some time to celebrate the team’s third straight bowl appearance.  "We are excited to receive our third straight bowl invitation and especially excited to be heading back to the R+L Carries New Orleans Bowl!  We look forward to another great bowl experience that includes our fans taking over the great city of New Orleans and playing in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.  Our team and fans will be ready."

The Ragin' Cajuns feature the most potent offense in the Sun Belt Conference this season.  Led by junior quarterback Terrance Broadway, who was the 2012 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl MVP after throwing for 316 yards and rushing for 108 yards, the Cajuns lead the Sun Belt averaging almost 40 points per game.

The duo of junior Alonzo Harris and freshman Elijah McGuire have helped the Cajuns break into the top 20 nationally in rushing.  Harris ranks second in the Sun Belt, rushing for 798 yards and 13 touchdowns while McGuire ranks second nationally averaging 9.1 yards per carry, picking up 686 yards and six touchdowns rushing and caught passes for 240 yards.

Junior Jamal Robinson and senior Darryl Surgent each return for their third R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.  Robinson caught six passes for 116 yards last year against East Carolina while Surgent accounted for a bowl-record 283 all-purpose yards in 2011, including a record 87-yard punt return for a touchdown.  The duo has teamed up to catch over 70 passes for 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns this season.

On defense, linebacker Justin Anderson leads a young Ragin' Cajuns defense by ranking among the national leaders averaging more than 10 tackles a game, his second consecutive 100-tackle season.  Sophomores Dominique Tovell (54 tackle, 11.5 TFL) and T.J. Worthy (49 tackles, 2 Interceptions) have come on to become defensive leaders.

The Cajuns join North Texas, who played in the first four editions of the game as the Sun Belt’s representative, as the only school to play in three consecutive R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowls.

With tonight’s invitation and acceptance, Bowl Officials now turn their attention to the Cajuns’ Conference USA opponent. Previous C-USA representatives include Southern Miss, Memphis, Rice and East Carolina.

The 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will be played on December 21st at 8 p.m. (CST) in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, and will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN Radio.
